UN Climate Change Conference in Brazil (COP30)

Federal Councillor Albert Rösti represented Switzerland at the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, on 20 and 21 November 2025 and took part in the negotiations at ministerial level. At the conference, Switzerland advocated for all states, especially those with high greenhouse gas emissions, to submit ambitious reduction targets aimed at implementing the Paris Agreement. In accordance with the Federal Council’s mandate of 12 September, Switzerland also committed to the recommendations of the 28th Climate Change Conference, including tripling the use of renewable energies and doubling energy efficiency by 2030, as well as phasing out fossil fuels by 2050.

Bilateral climate agreements

At COP30, Federal Councillor Albert Rösti signed climate agreements with Zambia and Mongolia. Switzerland can count the carbon emissions saved in these countries towards its climate target. It has previously concluded agreements with 14 other countries for this purpose. Offsetting abroad will contribute to achieving the Paris Climate Agreement targets.
